SCDiag

Early screening for sickle cell disease

In many countries, particularly in Africa, limited access to early screening delays care and contributes to high mortality among children with sickle cell disease. SCDiag offers a simple, rapid and accessible solution.

Transforming the lives of people affected by the world’s most common inherited blood disorder is within our reach.

The principle

The test uses a single drop of blood. A smartphone and an artificial-intelligence tool analyse the sample, without bulky equipment or complex reagents.

The aim is clear:

  • to enable mass screening, even in resource-limited areas
  • to quickly identify affected patients
  • to improve care from the very first days of life

The SCDiag project is part of an international collaboration between African and French teams, with clinical validation carried out in the field, notably in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

How it works

This study is currently being conducted to assess:

  • the accuracy of the test in detecting sickle cell disease,
  • its ability to distinguish between different haemoglobin phenotypes (AA, AS, SS),
  • its performance in newborns, a key factor in promoting early screening.

The aim

To make diagnosis accessible to everyone, everywhere.

SCDiag could make early diagnosis and appropriate care available to more children.

Our projects

We run practical programmes to support earlier diagnosis, better care and wider access to information. Our projects cover research, prevention, therapeutic patient education and access to healthcare in the regions most affected by sickle cell disease.
